Mother Nature

How you gonna make us pay for the rain?

Why you trying to make us buy what falls from the sky?

What gives you the right to sell water like you are the well?

Well… You’re not, you’re not, you’re not, you know you’re not.

You’re not entitled to charge for, nor make others purchase

What Mother Nature gives, what mother nature gives..

What mother nature gives, gives, gives, gives what mother nature gives…

It’s such a blessing, what we receive, how come you turn it into a political commodity?

Is there truly any need for this corruption and greed?

Oh please, can’t you just feel the blessings that we receive naturally naturally

From our Mother Mother Mother Mother Nature. Our Mother Mother Earth.

From our Mother Mother Mother Mother Nature. Our Mother Mother Earth. Mother Earth.

I don’t understand how you can buy and sell the land, when you don’t even tune into her.

I don’t agree that you can sanction the sea, so you can then take more than you deserve.

I don’t know why you try to build this pipeline, when it will destroy our water and our Earth

(And we’re pleading with you) But you’re not, you’re not, you’re not, you’re not, no you’re not (listening)

You’re not entitled to ignore the enormous harm you’re causing, to what…

Mother Nature gives, our Mother Nature gives…

It’s what mother nature gives, gives, gives, gives, our Mother Nature gives…

It’s such a blessing, what we receive, how come you turn it into a political commodity?

Is there truly any need for this corruption and greed?

Oh please, can’t you just feel the blessings that we receive naturally naturally

From our Mother Mother Mother Mother Nature. Our Mother Mother Earth.

From our Mother Mother Mother Mother Nature. Our Mother Mother Earth. Mother Earth.

Native traditional healers know which plants to take to make healing occur

And they do this with respect and honour, working together with her…

But in this greedy modern society, there’s GMO and pharmaceutical companies

Who want to claim and patent these remedies, and wipe away the seeds

So that we can no longer grow them naturally. (You’re not meant to dis-empower farmers and undermine food security.)

Native traditional people know the Sacredness of our Rivers,

The connectedness, and they work together to protect.

But in this greedy modern society, there’s governments and mining companies

Who want poison our rivers unclean…

No don’t let them, don’t let this happen

Protect her, respect her, preserve her Mother, Mother Nature, help her…

Our Mother, Mother, Mother, Mother Nature. Our Mother Mother Earth.                                       7/11/04

I wrote Mother Nature after my friends who own a farm, told me the council charges them for the rain that falls into their ponds and dams. Around the same time, I became aware of genetically modified plants that are being created and patented, the detrimental effects of pharmaceutical and pesticide company’s messing with Mother Natures’ natural ability to re-produce seeds that will germinate. This is a frightening prospect. Companies willing to restrict natural seed production, natures natural germinating processes…

GMO stands for “genetically modified organism”   Patented gene technologies will not help small farmers survive climate change, but they will concentrate corporate power, drive up costs, inhibit public sector research and further undermine the rights of farmers to save and exchange seeds.

I added the ‘water protecting’ part of this song, when I was invited to sing at an Australia Stands with Standing Rock Cairns fundraising gathering, and I recognised the wide relevance of this song.

My goal is to record ‘Mother Nature’ = sell and donate a portion of the proceeds to Kuranda Seed Savers, Sustainability Alliance FNQ and Friends of the Farmers, to support their vital work and dedication. When I play at their gatherings, I’ll film footage and create a film clip to share their message and work with the world. Kuranda Seed Savers are a group of farmers who know the importance of permaculture, regenerative agricultural systems modeled from natural ecosystems, and the importance of saving and sharing seeds.

My hope for this song is that it touches people and re-connects them with the beauty and abundant gifts our Earth gives to us. May we appreciate this and not take for granted these blessings. May we turn our hands and hearts to respecting her worth, caring for and protecting her from now on.
